Issue:
When accessing Renaissance Place on a Windows computer using
Internet Explorer 7 or higher, the Print Plug-In is not recognized and students
are prompted to run an Add-on.
When students click on Take a Quiz under AR (and TOPS
printing is enabled), an information alert indicates:
The previous webpage might require
the following add-on: 'Allows for direct printing of PDF files from the ...'
from 'Renaissance Learning, Inc.'. Click here to allow it to run...
When students click on Start Working under MathFacts in a
Flash (and TOPS printing is enabled), they see the message, “Please see your
teacher/administrator for help. Software needs to be installed to take
MathFacts in a Flash practices or tests”. An information alert indicates:
This website wants to run the
following add-on: 'Allows for direct printing of PDF files from the ...' from
'Renaissance Learning, Inc.'. If you trust the website and the add-on and want
to allow it to run, click here...
Note the first alert above will be presented when accessing
the Renaissance Place Software Requirements page.
Reason:
Internet Explorer 7 (and higher) includes enhanced security
to help prevent potentially malicious ActiveX controls from being run. Even if
an ActiveX control is programmatically marked as safe or trusted, IE will still
display a prompt.
Resolution:
Students will need to click on the information alert and
choose “Run Add-on”. If they ignore the message when taking an AR quiz, the
TOPS will open within the browser window and they'll need to print it from
there. If they ignore the message when attempting to work in MathFacts, they
are not able to start working.
To prevent students from being prompted to install the
ActiveX control:
1) Open
Internet Explorer, click on the Tools Menu, and choose [Internet Options].
2) Click
on the Security tab.
3) Click
on the Trusted sites zone, then click on [Sites].
4) Either
add your hosted site here (for example, Hosted1.renlearn.com), or add
*.renlearn.com, then click [Close].
5) If
you have customized the security level for the Trusted sites zone, either click
the [Default level] button to set it back to Medium
OR
If you want to keep your customized settings, click on [Custom level…]
and scroll to the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section.
·
Enable “Allow previously unused ActiveX controls to run
without prompt”.
·
If you are using Internet Explorer 8, disable “Only
allow approved domains to use ActiveX without prompt”.
6) Click [Apply],
then [OK].
Note: If your
Renaissance Place site is in a zone with the security level set to Medium or
lower, by default the ActiveX settings will be set as shown above and the user
will not be prompted to run the add-on. Students also might not experience the
above issue if they are logged onto the computer as a user with elevated
privileges.
