Is there a way to prevent students from using
Renaissance web-based applications at home?
Except for Home Connect, students should not be allowed to access Renaissance applications from home.
There are several security options available in the Product
Administration area of Renaissance web-based software. The option Restrict Student
Workstations allows you to specify which computers students can use to access
software other than Home Connect. This will prevent students from doing other
work in Renaissance applications such as taking AR quizzes and Star testing. The
restriction is set using the IP address (or IP address range) that identifies
each computer accessing the site. To set up IP restrictions, follow the steps
1) Log in to your Renaissance site
as a district administrator.
2) Click on Product
3) Click on Set Security
Options for Students and Parents.
4) Enter the IP address(es) or
range of IP addresses that identifies the computers students will use for to access their
Renaissance website. You may have a single IP address per school, or a subnet
range per school. See the examples shown below and be sure to include all computers within the school or
district that students may use to access the software.
5) Click [Save] when you are
When the restriction has been set properly, if a student
tries to log in to their Renaissance website from home, he will see a message stating, Students may not log
in outside the school network. If the
student enters the URL from the Home Connect Informational Letter, he will have
access to the Home Connect software.

Beginning October 3, 2012, the Security Options page will
show the IP address of your computer as seen by your Renaissance
application server. Click [Add to list] to add the individual IP address or
type a range that includes the IP address, using the examples as a guide. Consult
your network administrator or Internet Service Provider (ISP) if necessary.
Other security options:
You may also choose to enable the Date and Time Restriction
preference for Accelerated Reader, to prevent students from taking quizzes
before or after school and on the weekend. However, if this is the only
security measure you take, keep in mind students will be able to take quizzes
from home during the school day if they are home sick.
A third security measure in Accelerated Reader is to require
the monitor password when students take quizzes. The Monitor Password Required
is an option under the Accelerated Reader School/Classroom Student Quizzing preferences.
If you are using Star assessment products, you may also require the monitor password before students begin taking a test. The "Password Requirement" is an option under the Star product preferences. NOTE: The setting of the "Password Requirement" preference affects all of these programs; changing it in one program changes it for all of them:
- Star Early Literacy (English and Spanish)
- Star Math (English and Spanish)
- Star Reading (English and Spanish)
