Issue:

If our Renaissance Place server is accessible from outside the school or district’s network, is there a way to prevent students from using Renaissance Place applications at home?

Reason:

There may be concerns that making the server accessible from outside the school or district’s network for teacher access or Home Connect will allow students to access the other Renaissance Place applications, such as taking Accelerated Reader quizzes.

Resolution:

There are several security options available in the Product Administration area of Renaissance Place. The option Restrict Student Workstations allows you to specify which computers students can use to access software other than Home Connect. This will prevent students from doing other work in Renaissance Place such as taking AR quizzes and STAR testing. The restriction is set using the IP address (or IP address range) that identifies each computer accessing the server. To set up IP restrictions, follow the steps below:

1)  Log in to Renaissance Place as a district administrator.

2)  Click on “Product Administration”.

3)  Click on “Set Security Options for Students and Parents”.

4)  Enter the IP address(es) or range of IP addresses that identifies the computers students will use for Renaissance Place. You may have a single IP address per school, or a subnet range per school. Be sure to include all computers within the school or district that students may use to access the software.

5)  Click [Save] when you are finished.

When the restriction has been set properly, if a student tries to log in to Renaissance Place from home, he will see a message stating, “Student login has been disabled for your location”, or “Students may not log in outside the school network” if Renaissance Learning hosts your site. If the student enters the URL from the Home Connect Information Letter, he will have access to the Home Connect software. For more information about adding IP restrictions and examples, see the section that pertains to your Renaissance Place installation for hosted sites or custom-install sites below.

Renaissance Learning hosted sites:

If your software is hosted by Renaissance Learning, you’ll need to enter the school’s external IP address(es) as seen from the outside. For example:

Single IP Address:            24.177.1.50

IP Address range:             24.177.1.50-24.177.1.200

Entire subnet range:          24.177.1.*

Multiple subnet range:       24.177.1.*-24.177.8.*

Beginning October 3, 2012, the Security Options page will show the IP address of your computer as seen by your Renaissance Place application server. Click [Add to list] to add the individual IP address or type a range that includes the IP address, using the examples as a guide. Consult your network administrator or Internet Service Provider (ISP) if necessary.

Custom-Install Sites with Renaissance Place server on internal network:

You will typically enter internal IP addresses that identify the computers within your school or district. For example:

Single IP Address:            192.168.1.50

IP Address range:             192.168.1.50-192.168.1.200

Entire subnet range:          192.168.1.*

Multiple subnet range:       192.168.1.*-192.168.2.*

Consult your technology/computer coordinator or network administrator for guidance as you set these restrictions.

Other security options:

You may also choose to enable the Date and Time Restriction preference for Accelerated Reader, to prevent students from taking quizzes before or after school and on the weekend. However, if this is the only security measure you take, keep in mind students will be able to take quizzes from home during the school day if they are home sick.

A third security measure in Accelerated Reader is to require the monitor password when students take quizzes. The “Monitor Password Required” is an option under the Accelerated Reader - Student Quizzing preference.
