After installing, or upgrading to, STAR Reading version 2.4.2 on a computer running Windows XP and rebooting, the computer will not boot back up normally.

Product: STAR Reading 2.x
Platform: Windows
Last Updated: 2011/05/02

Issue:

After installing, or upgrading to, STAR Reading version 2.4.2 on a computer running Windows XP and rebooting, the computer will not boot back up normally. In the middle of loading drivers it goes to a blue screen with a Fatal System Error indicating the Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly.

Reason:

This occurs if you installed a Windows Update from Microsoft that was first released late December, 2007, and chose not to reboot, and you then install STAR Reading 2.4.2 and reboot. There are conflicting .dll files in the system folder.

Resolution:

This release of STAR Reading has been pulled from distribution. Going forward, use STAR Reading release 2.4.2a for Windows to upgrade or install on remaining computers. Since this version of the software does not update the database, there is no need to install 2.4.2a on workstations that are already running version 2.4.2 and have been rebooted.

Affected workstations may be reformatted, or you may use your Windows XP installation CD to get them operational and retain existing data and computer settings. Press <F12> during the boot process and choose to boot to the Windows XP CD. Choose the option to “set up Windows XP now.” After accepting the license agreement choose the option to “repair the selected Windows XP installation”. Follow the installation wizard.
