Issue:

Setting permissions to specific Renaissance Learning files on Windows NT, 2000, or XP Professional workstations.

Reason:

In a more secure environment, you may want to set permissions to a more specific set of files and folders than to your entire Windows or WINNT folder.

Resolution:

Giving access to specific Renaissance Learning files

Accelerated Grammar & Spelling, Accelerated Grammar & Spelling High School, Accelerated Math 2.1 and above, Accelerated Reader 6.3x, Accelerated Vocabulary, Accelerated Writer, MathFacts in a Flash, STAR Early Literacy 1.5x, STAR Math 2.1x, and STAR Reading 2.4x use the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Renaissance Learning folder to store their preference files. You must give access to this Renaissance Learning folder, rather than individual files.

To set permissions for Renaissance Learning preferences to the entire Windows/WINNT or Renaissance Learning folder, please refer to article #2358328.

Accelerated Math 1.0x - 2.02, Accelerated Reader 5.x - 6.22, AR BookGuide 2.x, Perfect Copy, Perfect Copy High School, STAR Early Literacy 1.0x, STAR Math 1.x - 2.0x, and STAR Reading 2.0 - 2.3 store files in the workstation’s Windows or WINNT folder. You should give access to the files, and one folder, listed below in step 3.

For example:  If you have Accelerated Reader, you will need to set permissions for the files and folder listed after All Products and the ACCREADR.INI listed for the specific product. The permissions must be set to each file/folder individually.

Windows NT Workstations:

1)     Log in to the Windows NT Workstation as the Administrator.

2)     Open Windows NT Explorer.

3)     Right-click on the file (or folder), and select Properties.

All Products: ALSBIGC.DAT, ALSBIGC.FPT, ALSPREFS.INI, ALS_Temp

Specific Product files:

Accelerated Math - ACCMATH.INI

Accelerated Reader - ACCREADR.INI

AR BookGuide - AR_Bkgde.ini

Perfect Copy - PRFCPY.INI

Perfect Copy High School - PCPYHS.INI

STAR Early Literacy - EARLYLIT.INI

STAR Math - STARMATH.INI

STAR Reading 2.x - STARREAD.INI

4)     Click on the Security tab.**

5)     Click on [Permissions].

6)     Click on [Add] and select Everyone or a group you have already set up containing the users that will access the software.

7)     Make sure that the Everyone group, or your other group of choice is highlighted, click the [Add] button and choose an access type of Change or Full Control.

8)     Click [OK].

9)     Click [OK] again.

10) Repeat steps 3 through 9 for each file you need to set permissions for.

Windows XP/Windows 2000 Professional workstations:

1)     Log in to the Windows XP or Windows 2000 Professional Workstation as the Administrator.

2)     Open Windows Explorer.

3)     Right-click on the file (or folder), and select Properties.

All Products: ALSBIGC.DAT, ALSBIGC.FPT, ALSPREFS.INI, ALS_Temp

Specific Product files:

Accelerated Math - ACCMATH.INI

Accelerated Reader - ACCREADR.INI

AR BookGuide - AR_Bkgde.ini

Perfect Copy - PRFCPY.INI

Perfect Copy High School - PCPYHS.INI

STAR Early Literacy - EARLYLIT.INI

STAR Math - STARMATH.INI

4)     Click on the Security tab.**

5)     Click on [Add].

6)     Verify “From this location” (XP) or “Look in” (2000) shows the local system. If it shows the domain, click [Locations] and select the local system, and click [OK] (XP Only).

7)     Type the name of your local group. Use the Everyone group, or a group you have already set up containing the users that will access the software, and click [Check Names].

8)     If the group is valid, click [OK]. If the object cannot be found, click [Cancel] and check the group name in Computer Management.

9)     With the group selected at the top, place a checkmark in the box next to Modify or Full Control, in the Allow Column.

10) Click [Apply].

11) Click [OK].

12) Repeat steps 3 through 11 for each file you need to set permissions for.

Note: If you are running the program from the local hard drive, the program location (by default for Accelerated Reader, C:\AccReadr or C:\Program Files\Renaissance Learning\Accelerated Reader) must also have at least Modify (Change on Windows NT) or Full Control permissions.  Repeat the steps above using your program location in step 3.

**On Windows XP, if you cannot locate the Security tab as an Administrator you will need to turn off Simple File Sharing. On Windows XP Home Edition, you will need to boot into safe mode, and then log in as Administrator or an Administrative User.
