Issue:

Are Renaissance Learning applications compatible with the Macintosh OS X operating system?

Resolution:

Renaissance Learning products can be used on certain Macintosh OS X configurations, as well as earlier versions of the Macintosh operating system, although our products have not been fully tested with OS X versions beyond 10.4.3. For specific details on compatibility, refer to the information below.

Compatible workstations:  OS 9.2.2, OS 10.2.8, OS 10.3.9 and OS 10.4.3 (adding any Windows workstations in this environment will cause locking issues)

OS X Server – 10.2.8, 10.3.9 or 10.4.3

Compatible workstations: Windows 2000 and Windows XP (adding any Macintosh workstations in this environment will cause locking issues)

OS X Server – 10.4.4 or higher**

Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003

AppleShare IP 6.3.3

Compatible workstations: OS 9.2.2, OS 10.3.9, 10.4.4 and 10.4.6

Novell Netware 5.x and 6.x

Compatible workstations: Windows and Macintosh workstations, including OS X workstations, when your database is stored on a Netware 5.x or 6.x server running Native File Access or Prosoft Engineering’s Netware 5 Services for Appleshare (Netware Client for Mac OS X is not currently supported).  See Note below for further compatibility.

Windows NT Server **

Compatible workstations:  Only Macintosh or only Windows (a mixture of both Macintosh and Windows workstations will cause locking issues) **

** Testing has not been completed with OS X through 10.4.3 (and above), and incompatibilities may exist. If you use Renaissance Learning applications in a non-compatible environment, you may encounter the following errors at various locations in the applications:

  • “Data is locked by another user”

  • Fatal error messages that include the following numbers: 16034, 16032, 16027, 16041, and 16030

Note:  High CPU utilization has been reported on Netware 6.x servers running Native File Access with Macintosh workstations.  The increase in CPU occurs when Macintosh systems launch the desktop applications.  This only effects the desktop applications.  Renaissance Place applications are not effected.

AccelScan 2110 USB Model and OS X 10.4.x

Renaissance Learning is currently investigating an issue where while your USB AccelScan is plugged into your Macintosh system running 10.4.x, the system will not boot correctly. Plugging the AccelScan in AFTER the system is booted works fine. This does not happen on all systems.

Macintosh OS X 10.5.x (Leopard)

For compatibility concerns specific to OS 10.5.x, please see KB article #6785666.

Renaissance Place Client Applications

All Renaissance Place client applications will run on workstations running the OS X operating system. Please refer to the following page for system requirements for the browser-based applications:

Connecting to Your File Server from an OS X Workstation

When connecting to your file server, you must use an AFP connection rather than a SMB connection. If you use a SMB connection, data files will be locked on the server and only one workstation will be able to access them at a time.

To use an AFP connection:

1)     Click on the [Go] menu and choose “Connect to Server”.

2)     If you know the IP address of your file server, you can skip to step 3. Otherwise, navigate to the file server you need to connect to and click on it once.

3)     Find the Address field near the bottom of the dialog box.

4)     The first three letters of the address need to be “afp”:

Scenario A) If you know the IP address of your server, you can simply type in “afp://<ip address>” (where the IP address of your server replaces <ip address>). Go to step 5.

Scenario B) If you followed the instructions in step 2, and you chose your file server from a listed Appletalk Zone, the first three letters should already be “afp”. You can skip to step 5.

Scenario C) If the Address field shows “smb://<ip address>” (where the IP address is already filled in), you can simply replace “smb” with “afp” and go to step 5

5)     Click the [Connect] button

Connecting to Your Windows NT 4.0 File Server from an OS X Workstation

To use an AFP connection:

1)     Click on the [Go] menu and choose “Connect to Server”.

2)     Click on the AppleTalk Zone, then select the server.

3)     Confirm the address field follows this format: afp:/at/<SERVER>:<APPLETALK ZONE>.

4)     Click the [Connect] button.

To confirm your zone name, open System Preferences, open Network, and click on the AppleTalk tab.
