Reason:
Windows 2000
Professional, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 workstations all have
added security. When you install your Renaissance Learning software, there are
files that are created and stored on the workstation’s hard drive. If users do
not have enough access to the files, you may see one or more of the errors
listed above.
Resolution:
Set permissions to the Renaissance Learning preferences
folder on the hard drive.
1)
Log in to the workstation as the Administrator.
2)
From Windows Explorer, open Local Disk (C:).
3)
On Windows 2000/XP:
Open the Document and Settings
folder, then the All Users folder, then the Application Data folder. Note:
If you cannot see the Application Data folder in All Users: Choose Folder
Options from the Tools menu, click on the View tab, and switch the bullet from
Do Not Show hidden files and folders to Show hidden files and folders.
On Windows Vista/Windows 7:
Open the Program Data folder. Note:
If you cannot see the Program Data folder: Press the <Alt> key on the
keyboard. Choose Folder Options from the Tools menu, click on the View tab, and
switch the bullet from “Do Not Show hidden files and folders” to “Show hidden
files and folders”.
4)
Right click on the Renaissance Learning folder, and select
Properties.
5)
Click on the Security tab.**
6)
Select the group named Users (followed by the local computer
name in parenthesis) or a group you have already set up containing the users
that will access the software.
7)
In the Permissions section of your screen, in the Allow
column, place a checkmark in the box next to Modify or Full Control.
8) Click
[Apply].
9) Click
[OK].
If you are running
the program from the local hard drive,
the program directory must also have at least Modify or Full Control
permissions. If you have more than one
Renaissance Learning program installed, repeat the steps above for each
program, using your program location in step 3, (for example, by default for
Accelerated Reader, C:\AccReadr or C:\Program Files\Renaissance
Learning\Accelerated Reader).
**On Windows XP, if
you cannot locate the Security tab as an Administrator you will need to turn
off Simple File Sharing. On Windows XP
Home Edition, you will need to boot into safe mode, and then log in as
Administrator or an Administrative User. For more information, see
Microsoft’s knowledge base article on this topic at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874/en-us.
Turning off Simple File
Sharing on Windows XP:
1) Right Click on Start
and select Explore.
2) Select Folder
Options from the Tools menu.
3) Click on the View tab.
4) Locate “Use Simple File Sharing” and take the check out of
the box.
5) Click [Apply].
6) Click [OK].
