Issue:

We are receiving Fatal Error messages (16034, 16040, 16041) while using Accelerated Reader. Students are continually receiving a 16034 message and/or black screens at the end of a quiz, or the message, "The test could not be saved because the data is locked by another user". I will be updating my Windows Accelerated Reader program to version 5.14 – article #2379354, OR I am already running Windows version 5.13, and I have both Windows and Macintosh workstations on my network.

Resolution:

Update your Macintosh Accelerated Reader program to version 5.13. This version is fully compatible with the Windows Accelerated Reader versions 5.13 and 5.14.

Things you need to know:

1) You can only use the autoupdater for the Accelerated Reader 5.13 version if you are currently running Accelerated Reader 5.12. You cannot use the autoupdater if you are using anything previous to the Accelerated Reader 5.12 version.

2) This will update your database. You will not be able to use any earlier versions of the program, including Accelerated Reader 5.12, once you have upgraded.

3) This Macintosh upgrade is intended to accompany the Windows 5.13 OR 5.14 upgrades. NOTE: Version 5.13 is no longer available.

This upgrade is not necessary if any of the following are true:

a) You only have Macintosh workstations on your network.

b) You have all stand-alone computers.

Steps to upgrade:

NOTE: The steps below are for your Macintosh workstations only. Before completing these steps, you should complete the steps in Knowledge Base article #2379354 on your Windows workstations, or you should already be running version 5.13.

1) Click HERE to download the Accelerated Reader 5.13 patch for your Macintosh workstations. Save the file to your workstation’s desktop.

2) Once you have downloaded the 513MAC.SEA.HQX to your workstation, double-click on it to extract the information.

3) Click [Continue].

4) Click on the [Desktop] button and then click [Save].

5) Click [Quit].

6) This should have created an Update Mac folder on your workstation desktop. Copy the Update Mac folder from your desktop to the Accreadr folder located inside your Accelerated Reader data location on your server.

7) Open your Accelerated Reader Management application.

8) Click [Continue].

9) Your Accelerated Reader program files will be updated. You should receive a message "Installation was successful." Click [Quit].

10) Restart this workstation.

11) Open the Accelerated Reader Management application a second time once the workstation is booted back up.

12) Verify that your splash screen says version 5.13 and then press any key or click your mouse.

13) Continue logging into your Accelerated Reader program.

14) At this time, you can allow the remaining Macintosh workstations to open the Accelerated Reader Student or Management application. The remaining workstations will need to follow steps 7 through 13.*** Once a workstation has been restarted, you may resume using the program on that computer.

15) If you run Accelerated Reader Data Doctor from any of your Macintosh workstations, you will also need to update your Data Doctor files at this time. Click HERE to download the updated Accelerated Reader Data Doctor files.

16) Once you have the DDS.SEA.HQX downloaded to your workstation, double-click on it to extract the files.

17) Click [Continue].

18) Click on the [Desktop] button and then click [Save].

19) Click [Quit]. This will create a Dds folder on your workstation’s desktop.

20) Copy the Dds folder from your desktop to the Accelerated Reader folder that contains your program files. This is located by default at Macintosh HD: Accelerated Reader on each workstation.

21) Click [OK] to overwrite the existing folder. If you do not receive an alert to confirm replacement , you have not copied the folder to the correct location

Repeat steps 15 through 21 on any other computers where you want to run Data Doctor.

***If you have upgraded to Accelerated Reader 5.13 already and would like to add additional workstations, you will need to follow the steps below for each additional workstation.

1) Install Accelerated Reader 5.12 to the local hard drive of the new workstation.

2) Open the Accelerated Reader Management application from that workstation, select to "Register this product using a previous installation" and select your existing data location on your server – you should receive a class version error.

3) Close out of the program after setting the data location, and navigate to your Accelerated Reader data location.

4) Open the AccReadr folder in the data location.

5) Open the Update Mac folder in the AccReadr folder.

6) Open the Install Files folder in the Update Mac folder.

7) Double-click on the AR 5.12 -> 5.13 file located in the Install Files folder. This manually runs the 5.13 installation.

8) Click [Continue].

9) Verify the 5.13 program will install to the correct location (your current program location, typically Accelerated Reader) and click [Install].

10) Follow steps 10 through 13 above.

11) Choose to "Register this product using a previous installation" once again and select your existing data location on your server.
